Respecting Black Women
C. Vivian Stringer, the head coach of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, urged the audience at a symposium on respecting Black women to remain vigilant and to broaden the conversation from the Don Imus incident to all of the ways in which Black women are degraded and disrespected on a daily basis.

I was in attendance at this symposium and your article clearly depicts the flow of discourse taking place on that evening. While dialogue must continue onthis subject, I find it amazing that a direct course of action was not dedicated. Perhaps it is the panelists\’ opinion that continued discourse will force negative rap artists to discontinue their course. I doubt it.

I AM A BLACK MALE OF 72 YEARS. I DO NOT HAVE TO READ AND DID NOT READ THE ABOVE ARTICLE TO GIVE MY OPINION AND SPEAK OUT ON THE SUBJECT MATTER. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MYSTERY TO MY AS TO WHY HE HAVE ALLOWED THIS TO CONTINUE FOR SO LONG WITHOUT SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THIS DEGRADATION OF BLACK WOMEN IN OUR NEWS MEDIA, COMEDY SHOWS, AND RAP MUSIC. OUR OWN RACE IS MORE AT FAULT THAN IMUS. WE HAVE ALLOWED THIS TO GO IN IN THE MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT WORLD UNDER THE GUISE OF FREE SPEACH AND THE MEANS OF MAKING A LIVING. PT APALLS ME WHEN I AM SLIPPING THROUGH THE CHANNELS ON TV AND COME ACROSS A BLACK COMEDIAN IN FRONT OF A BLACK AUDIENCE, MANY OF THEM WITH MORE WOMEN THAN MEN, WHO ARE LAUGHING AND CLAPPING THEIR HANDS WHILE THE COMEDIAN IS MAKING DISPARAGING REMARKS ABOUT THEM. I AM TALKING ABOUT PAYING CUSTOMERS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AMONG THE SO CALLED AND SELF NAMED UPPER CLASS BLACKS. I HAVE ALWAYS TURNED AWAY FROM THAT TRASH AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. I DID NOT ALOW MY GRANDS TO VIEW SUCH PROGRAMS WHILE IN MY HOME. EVEN WHILE THIS DEBATE IS ONGOING, I HAVE HEARD SOME COMEDIANS SAY THEY ARE NOT TO BE HELD TO THE SAME STANDARDS. i SAY ALL SHOULD BE HELD TO THE SAME STANDARDS AND SHOULD ALL BE BARRED FROM THE AIRWAVES THE SAME AS IMUS.

Thank you for attending the Symposium on June 26th. Your observations are the same as mine. I am a member of several of the organizations that came together to present this meeting. I would certainly appreciate your recommendations as to how we might go forth from here.
