    Dear Margaret,
I write as mother of Hannah Mclaughlin’94 to thank you for this very helpful letter. I would like to contribute to this effort when it becomes clear to me exactly what is to be done…I have been frustrated with the rather irresponsible postings of some of the men on this list. I would, as an historian, be interested in a brief summary of the times and circumstances of earlier closings and how “resurrection” was achieved. Is there any truth in the allegation that there is pressure from the present University Board to “clense”college of its from the founding tradition of “progressive” social and political ideals? I credit Antioch College for supporting the values with which Hannah Mclaughlin was raised. She is now a First Grade teacher in an all Latino school in the LA school district; has been a co chair of her Teachers’ Union and is now a co-founder of the Antioch group in LA…I am so proud of her and thank Antioch; for Hannah, coming second after a very brilliant sister, needed the nurture and opportunity to try her wings in the world of work to set her on track as a socially responsible and spiritually mature woman. She will be married to a wonderful New Hampshire man on august 11 in Redondo Beach, CA in her parish church where she heads the Sunday School. It is possible to be, as I am, a radical Left committed world-citizen and a Christian!
    Thank you again, Ellie McLaughlin

Allowing Steve Lawry to have anything to do with Antioch College is a monumental blunder. Steve Lawry is one of the administrators who is trying to close the college. Now he\’s playing dumb like he didn\’t know anything about it. Which begs the question; is he lying, or merely, stupid? Either way, he should be removed from any authority over the College. He has expressed his derision for the student body and for the mission of the College numerous times. If this plan has any chance of working then the fox can\’t be guarding the henhouse. He had his chance-he blew it.

Thank you Ms. Kamara for this insightful article on the situation Antioch is in. In it Lynda Sirk with Public Relations for the University system stated that $50 million would be needed to save Antioch by the fall. But this is the figure the University system has stated is needed by 2012 to demolish the historic Antioch College campus (except for the original three buildings) and replace it with a high density campus for retirees, corporations and oh yes students in a new campus called Antioch University Yellow Springs. This vision is not on the table for the Fall of 07\’ and was rejected by alumni at June\’s reunion. $50 million does not need to be raised to raze beautiful and functional buildings. $50 Million does not need to be raised to build retiree housing on a college campus. Money does need to be raised to save Antioch College from a system that has forgotten just how important the college that gave birth to it is.

  4. Tony Dallas Says:

The Antioch alumni’s target is $40 million by next year at this time, not $50 million by this fall (though that would be nice). Chancellor Toni Murdockhas been quoted in the press as saying $10 million would be enough to keep the college open another year.

Othere famous Antiochians include Judge Leon Higginbotham, Rod Serling, Herb Gardner, cartoonist Ed Fisher, actor Ken Jenkis, acting instructor Roy London, Stephen J. Gould, theatre director Nancy Meckler, and Poet US Laureate Mark Strand. All are graduates of Antioch College (not the University).

  5. cynthia Says:

All I can say is RIP. It was the place to go if you couldn’t hack grades–and reality. Current year’s cost: $47k

  6. scribstress Says:

RIP indeed Cynthia. As of today the alumni association has raised 12 million dollars towards keeping the college open–all the while ‘hacking reality’ just fine! Folks who understand and love the college please go to antiochiansorg and get involved, make a donation or tell us why you care.
