Perspectives: What Parents v. Seattle Means for Colleges and Universities

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District, though it steers clear of dismantling college and university admissions policies, has tremendous implications for those of us concerned about diversity in higher education. According to the new Supreme Court decision, K-12 schools have no authority to create racial balance in schools in order to assure that students are educated in a racially diverse environment.

Dr. Olwell is right on point. Not having the oppourtunity to have diversity in ones life will not allow our children to understand fully what life will be like for them in the present or the future. We need to understand the differences in each other, so we might be able to just coexist in our own evironment. If we don\\\’t keep a divere nation,we are just putting ourselves back to the pre- sixties and that is not a good era to revisit for most poeple of color, only for its historical value. On the other hand we need to revisit this period to see what we need to improve or change again, since most people have forgotten or never knew what it was like and what it will be like again if diversity is not kept in our children lives.
