Two observations about the OSU diversity situation. First, it appears that it uses the a low cost bidder and prior history approach to contracting. Good for them. They shouldn’t go with a higher cost bidder or unproven organization just to make their diversity reports a little peachier.

As for lack of diversity in faculty and student body, there is an easy explanation. OSU is a second-tier school aspiring to be a top tier school. They are competing for the same students and faculty as the University of Oklahoma, University of Texas and Texas A&M locally and a stifling number of higher rated schools nationally. I am not saying OSU is a bad school, it’s just not on the lists of schools of highly sought after minorities being wooed by wealthier, bigger name schools.

The discussion over making efforts to recruit foreign students leads me to believe that OSU is trying to diversify its student body without lowering its academic standards and I applaud their efforts.
