Best and Brightest: Five Years, Five Degrees For One UConn Student
Devin Gaines is any university’s ideal candidate. An overachiever in the utmost sense of the word, the 22-year-old has earned five degrees in five years —all as an undergraduate student at the University of Connecticut.

This serves as reminder of what education really is about. The passion of the young man drove him to explore the relativity of learning, where one question begets another and so on. By not limiting himself to nuances of a singular discipline he was able to learn more thoroughly than most could ever imagine. At the same time that many of his peers were wrestling with the choice of a major course of study, Mr. Gaines was busy conquering, rather than second guessing. Let’s hope that his attitude is infectious and that institutions take note so that stories such as his will soon become commonplace.

Dear Devin,
Mere words cannot convey how very proud I am of your great achievements. It has indeed been my pleasure watching you transform from a High School graduate and develop into the prime example of what Jackie Robinson would have been so very proud of, (A Role Model for Others)
As you go forth to seek all of your endeavors in life, always remember to keep God first in every decision that you make, and in every direction that you take. And you will see that there is nothing in this world that could hold you back from achieving everything in life that you wish to accomplish.
Sincerely,
Ms. Sheila Sykes, Program Associate

I remembered this young man this morning; his bright and infectious smile, his gregarious and friendly manner. I remembered seeing him on the news when he graduated; he was so friendly and open, his accomplishments something very few of us could match. He stayed with me; a memory of someone sweet and special. I was very saddened to read of his untimely drowning today; I feel a loss as a complete stranger. God help his family and friends!

I love your energy as a person, a brother, a friend. You were a modest person. Five degrees, and yet you took time out to give me advice about how to pursue my education. I am truly glad to have met you. Not many people can say that they met an angel, but in my prescence you are that Devin. An angel on earth, and angel in Heaven.. I know for sure.
