Welcome to the club! Racism is present alive in America and it is getting worse in our society. I guess American Indians are experiencing racism now because they have become active players in our society. While government officials in this country are concerned about how citizens are treated in other countries, they need to review their own track record about human rights and racism.

Yes, in areas where the largest group of people of color are not African American a survey of White students may show them as more racist against that group rather than African Americans. I found this the case, as one of about 6 African American adults, in the general “metropolitan” area of 18,000 when I worked at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. I am also a quarter-blood Apache. Just because white students were MORE vocal about their nasty racism against American Indians (all based on their unrecognized White privilege BTW) didn’t mean they were any more enlightened about Blacks or Latino’s. I was racially harassed off of that campus and out of the community 13 years ago. Also who says white students are “liberal” on race? They may think they are liberal but ask their few Black and Latino (and American Indian if any) professers and see what THEY say! And since when is this so-called subtle racism new or those nasty stereotypes only attributed to American Indians.

Someone got paid to find this out. I could have told you for free!

This does not surprise me at all. I live in the metro area of Minnesota. I see it, hear it and feel it. It is especially bad in northern Minnesota.

It is not surprising considering in some public schools the youth are still taught that the thanksgiving myth is true and that after that period we just sort of went away or something. The “blinders” about racisms need to come off in american society and the only way that can happen is turning ignorance into knowledge (Don’t hate, educate!). Hopefully there will come a time when we can respectfully accept each others differences, until then there is much work to do.

In regard to prejudice toward American Indian people, this is a very real thing. We are not viewed as real people and the \

Native American Indians are passive people but if the tribes would not fight amongst themselves we could control this state. The Indians are the ones who provide more jobs. Also the legislators tell the Tribes they need to be more self sufficient and now that some of the tribes have begun to do so now the state wants part of that money. I am sure if some of those students new they may have a “Indian Princess” (they do not exist) in their family tree they would research it so they could get their “Indian” money. All it boils down to is greed. Racism does exist and though we are supposed to be liberals, it is just for those of us who wish to walk around with blinders on. Learn the history before you judge because you may be working for the ones who provide for your family. Not all Indians are lazy. We do have educated doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers, etc., as well as your race.

LEARN Your U.S. History and quit being so white ignorant! They pointed GUNS at our people and stole everything and then said they would provide for our health, education and everything else that we needed to live on the POW camps that our people were forced onto.We didn’t ask for any of the FREE stuff that you think we are all getting,we would rather have all our LAND back and you all off of them.So go learn your history and then judge!

Blacks are looked on more favorably than Indians for 2 reasons. First of all, although the skin color is different, many blacks only want the same things whites want (in the sense of the same rewards - security and stability) and desperately try to integrate into American culture. American Indians often seem to only want to integrate into the larger American mainstream if they can do it on their own terms, which brings us to the second reason blacks are looked on more favorably. Although a few Indians have managed to integrate and retain their more traditional identity, they are outnumbered by blacks 100 to 1. The vast majority of white people in this country don’t know enough about Indians simply because they are totally unfamiliar with them. By contrast, blacks can be found, and are readily identified by skin color and physical traits, almost everywhere in America. White people fear the unknown.

These 50 something ignorant so-called educated college students do not reperesent all. I feel there is not enough data or subjects to really call this an evaluation/study and feel there is more healthy people out there. These are just a few and words to again make us feel inferior.

It’s no wonder that racism toward Indians is so high in America, all one has to do is count the news reports against Indians and putting them down as to the little reports that cover the facts about Indians and all their real issues they have to deal with in this country!.
It’s racism to talk bad about Blacks, it’s Americas national past time trashing Indians and getting away with it in newspapers reports, try that toward Blacks and you will be fired from your job!
The American national press has always got away with trashing Indians. Remember, it was newspapers reports that brought about Wounded Knee Massacre by the U.S. Army!

U.S. President Lincoln and other presidents had no problem killing Indians, It’s in the American DNA to trash Indians. Americans think the U.S. Civil War was all about ending slavery in this country, but true history tells us the federal government before during and after the war was enslaving Indians on reservations! But, newspapers in this country will not report it that way!

Mankato, Minnesota, Dec. 16, 1862
303 Indian males were set to be hanged

In response to the survey, I have been putting up with racism in western OK all my life. It is so common to find people that feel the same way those students feel. Almost all anglos feel that we get a check in the mail every month, that we get free health care (when we Indians feel that the IHS is trying their best to kill us off with the poorest of health care.), and that we don\’t work and are lazy. Even in this day and age it is appalling to know that we are indeed STILL thought of by Anglos in this way.

Over the years, I have become increasingly alarmed at the complacency I witness regarding Native issues and white America. I am Yankton Sioux Indian and have witnessed first hand the subtle racism mentioned in, “Survey Finds More Prejudice Toward American Indians.” I realize there is no magic bullet available and it will take generations to undo the all-encompassing damage that has been done to the image of American Indians. I would, however, like to think we would be further along than we are in changing our attitudes about Native Americans. How will academia rise to this challenge?
