Unmasking the Model Minority Myth

Widely considered as overachievers, Asian students’ academic struggles are often downplayed, ignored.

I am disturbed at the campaign to knock Asians down a couple of pegs. First, we classify them as “over-represented” on elite college campuses so we can set higher standards for their enrollment. Now we want to strip them of their “model minority” status. Here’s an idea, instead of critizing Asians for the amazing progress they have made, why not try to imitate their work ethic, culture and interests to raise other groups to their level? I know, every culture is perfect how it is and the only thing that would ever keep a group from succeeding is overt, institutional racism but I seem to recall a lot of negative feelings against Asians due to recent wars and migrations yet they still have risen up to outperform every other group in the US academically.

When I was in junior high the principal had a plaque hanging above his office door that said, “Any fool can criticize what he can’t have and most do.” Maybe those of you who have it out for Asians should have paid a visit to my junior high principal. You might have learned a thing or two about life.
