High Teacher Absences Hurting Learning

A year is a long time in a child’s education – the time it can take to learn cursive writing or beginning algebra. It is also how much time kids can spend with substitute teachers from kindergarten through high school – time that is all but lost for learning.

There are some questions begging to be asked:

Why are teachers missing from school? It would seem important to know the reasons for absences.

Is it physical sickness or burnout?

Why are there not enough subs? Could it be the work environment and the pay?

What is the role of educational leadership (administration) in the school?

Why should professional development be off contract time? Shouldn’t the district be interested in professionally developing their teachers?
