I applaud Dr. Cosby because he is forcing a discussion that we simply must have. In many ways our community been in denial or too pained to address the many ills that confront us daily. As a result, our sense of communal responsibility has been replaced by many with an individual approach to survival. Our greatest challenge now is in our learning to take responsibility for ourselves by realizing that we are responsible for our “collective” ourselves. The decision about our cultural future is being shaped right now and we must chose to participate in the decisions that govern our destiny.

I dont think whites are doing that much better than blacks between the upper and lower end middle class. It seems to me that prices keep going up and wages are stagnant. Housing costs have been on the rise for years and it is to the point that I dont know how people can afford to buy a house without two good working providers. Also energy costs have risen and the price of new cars keeps going up at an alarming rate. Then Pres. Bush started this initiative to use corn ethanol in gasoline, causing the cost of a lot of basic foods and groceries to go up. Corn is used in Animal feed so that even drove up the cost of beef, chicken and pork.
I look around and I dont see how people are making ends meet. Also the social structure in many families is crumbling. I dont see how a single parent can possibly make ends meet. Yet, you see more and more single parents. This both a white and a black problem. However, without looking at statistical data, I would say it is more prevalent in Black Society.
Now more than ever it is time for Men and Women to stick together as a family and help each other. If there was ever a time when we needed to strengthen the family and keep marriages together now is that time.

Why would you say that there are more single parents who are African American if you have no statistical data to cite? What’s the point of injecting anecdotal commentary that perpetuates nothing more than a negative stereotype?
Also, what about marriage benefits for same sex couples? An egalitarian society that provided equal benefits to its members would be nice instead of a heterosexist one.

The economic seperation between the most successful and least successful Blacks is a good sign. It shows that those who want to break free from the cycle of poverty and self-pity are taking advantage of the opportunities that America offers. This gap is evident in all prosperous countries. An interesting thing to note, that often goes unmentioned, is how well of the poorest among us is. How many “poor” people have heating, air conditioning, cable tv, microwaves, a stereo, a car, a video game console and an MP3 player? Most do. In fact, only in extreme cases where substance abuse or mental instability is present, we don’t have anyone starving to death. Yes, the gap between the richest an poorest is growing but so is the gap between our poorest and the world’s poorest.

Have you forgotten that we are all connected? Have you forgotten that skin color makes no difference just as eye color does not? If it does to the world, and we suffer for it, they are committing the injustice. Let us bind together through it, and shout! But not split from each other! You are falling into its snare by responding with the same blind aggression. Lash out at whom you will, but we are all different and we are all the same; we all came from the same place though our journeys have been much different. You are promoting racial aggression, not simply commenting on our us and our brothers and sisters, who include the ‘whites’ and the ‘reds’ and the ‘yellows’ and whoever else you care to define them as.
