NASPA Addresses Collegiate Black Male Performance
In a qualitative study examining the lives of 20 collegiate Black males, Iowa State University graduate student researchers determined the six reasons why Black males struggle at predominately White institutions: isolation, the lack of positive images, the lack of preparation, financial factors, the lack of mentors and pride.

Having gone to a predominately white institution and having participated in such mentor ship programs as suggested by this research, my (success in) life and at the university I attended is a living testimony that they do have a myriad of benefits, some of which this article didn’t even get to. If the clarion call of equal access and opportunity to succeed is to ever be truly heeded by academia, then leveraging the ideas suggested by this research would be a most appropriate step.
